Morning State Sports Briefs: MU loses at Villanova 75-70

Wisconsin Sports
-- The Marquette University men’s basketball team lost at Villanova 75-70 last night.

PHILADELPHIA - The Marquette University men’s basketball team lost at Villanova 75-70 last night.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half. They got to within three several times in the closing minutes. But Marquette could not force turnovers off a full-court press and they had to foul, allowing 12th-ranked Villanova to win the game at the free-throw line. The Wildcats made 29-of-33 from the charity stripe, while Marquette was just 13-of-14. Also, the Eagles were cold beyond-the-arc, making just three of 16 three-point attempts. Mouphtaou Yarou scored 18 points for Villanova, which improved to 6-and-3 in the Big East and 18-4 overall. The victory was only the second in their last five games, and they won their 46th straight at their campus Pavilion. Marquette dropped to 5-5 in the conference and 14-9 overall. They’re 3-5 in their last eight games – seven of which were against ranked opponents. The Eagles’ next game is next Wednesday night at South Florida.

University of Wisconsin football coach Bret Bielema announced a recruiting class of 19 scholarship players and eight walk-ons yesterday. Tight end Eric Steffes from Fond du Lac is part of the group, but he’s not expected to join the program until after next season because he’ll have shoulder surgery. Bielema said he might add one more scholarship player. Reports said the UW held a scholarship open for Florida high school quarterback Jacoby Brissett – but he’s expected to announce tomorrow that he’ll be going to Miami instead. The Badgers will have five quarterbacks at their spring camp. That includes walk-on Joel Stave from Whitnall High School in Hales Corners. He enrolled early, and will join sophomore-to-be Jon Budmayr, freshman Joe Brennan, and walk-ons Nate Tice and Drew McAdams. Quarterback Curt Phillips is not due back until next summer as he continues to recover from a knee injury. The recruiting class also includes walk-on Tyler Leonhard of Tony. He’s the brother of former Badgers’ All-American and NFL safety Jim Leonhard and an All-Northwest player for Flambeau. J.J. Watt's brother Derek will also play for UW next season from Pewaukee.
