MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Brewers announced the signing of veteran utility player Mark Kotsay today. To make room on the roster, the Brewers designated minor-league right-hander Roque Mercedes for assignment.
Assistant general manager Gord Ash said the 35-year-old Kotsay would be the back-up to first baseman Prince Fielder – and he’ll be Milwaukee’s top hitter off the bench. Ash said Kotsay would fill the role that Jim Edmonds had a year ago. He said Kotsay still has a potent bat, after hitting eight homers with 31 RBI’s a year ago with a .239 average. Ash also said Kotsay has been on some winning teams, and the Brewers need that kind of experience.
He’ll make $800,000 on his one-year contract, with up to $450,000 more in incentives and roster bonuses. As for Mercedes, the Brewers have 10 days to trade him, release him, or give him a minor league assignment. Milwaukee re-acquired Mercedes off waivers from Arizona recently. The Brewers traded him in 2009 for the mid-season deal that brought Felipe Lopez to Milwaukee for just over two months.
