Overnight State Sports Briefs: Wilson wins Phoenix Open, his second win of PGA Tour
Wisconsin Sports-- Pewaukee native Mark Wilson won his second PGA golf tournament of the year today. Wilson defeated Jason Dufner in a second playoff hole to win the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
PHOENIX - Pewaukee native Mark Wilson won his second PGA golf tournament of the year today. Wilson defeated Jason Dufner in a second playoff hole to win the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Wilson started the day with a two-stroke lead with six holes to go. But Dufner caught up as Wilson parred every hole this morning in regulation – and both ended their fourth rounds at 18-under-par 266 for the weekend. Both parred the first playoff hole on Number-18. Wilson then won the tournament with a seven-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole at Number-10, while Dufner’s birdie shot landed six-feet short from the rough.
It was Wilson’s fourth career victory – and his second this year, after winning the Sony Open in Hawaii last month. Wilson said he’s playing the best golf of his life and quote, “I’m just riding the train as long as I can.” He received almost one-point-one million dollars for his victory. Vijay Singh and Martin Laird tied for third.

The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team made a big jump in the polls, after their victories over Purdue and Michigan State this past week. The Badgers rose six places to No. 13 in the AP media poll. Wisconsin is 17-5 overall, and will play at Iowa on Wednesday night before hosting top-ranked Ohio State on Saturday. The Marquette men received votes in the AP poll, and are nine spots away from the Top-25. The Golden Eagles resume Big East play on Wednesday night at South Florida.

In the AP women’s poll, UW-Green Bay moved up three spots to 18th. The Phoenix are 22-1 overall. Their next game is on Thursday night at Illinois-Chicago. And the Marquette women jumped two places to 21st. The Golden Eagles are 19-4, and will play at DePaul on Saturday.

The Milwaukee Bucks will host Toronto tomorrow night. And coach Scott Skiles says his team must find a way to win at home if it’s going to have any chance at success. The Bucks are just 11-11 at the Bradley Center, including Saturday night’s nine-point loss against Detroit. Milwaukee plays 16-of-its-next-23 games at home, and Skiles says now is the time for the Bucks to make hay. He says the Bucks need to win at least five home contests before the All-Star break later this month. Skiles says it would put Milwaukee at about the place where it needs to qualify for the post-season. The Bucks are currently two-and-a-half games behind Indiana for the eighth-and-final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Bucks are 19-30 overall.
