Morning State Sports Briefs: UW-Madison at Iowa for Big Ten road game

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team will play at Iowa tonight. The 13th-ranked Badgers are coming off a 26-point home rout of Michigan State last Sunday. They’re now 7-3 in the Big Ten and 17-5 overall. But Wisconsin is just 2-4 on the road.

Iowa is 3-8 in conference play and 10-13 overall. But the Hawkeyes have won two straight, and they’re getting better under first-year coach Fran McCaffery. Badgers’ freshman guard Ben Brust had initially committed to Iowa – but he wanted a release after former Hawkeyes’ coach Todd Lickliter was fired. Brust is averaging three-and-a-half minutes a game in his first season. And he has only played a total of six minutes in three Big Ten outings.

Former Marquette forward Steve Novak has signed a 10-day contract with the San Antonio Spurs. Novak had just joined Reno of the NBA Development League, where he averaged 18-and-a-half points and six-and-a-half rebounds in two games. Earlier this season, he played in seven games with the Dallas Mavericks and averaged just over one-and-a-half points. The Houston Rockets drafted Novak in the second round out of Marquette in 2006. He has played in 202 NBA contests with the Rockets, Mavericks, and Los Angeles Clippers. Novak has career averages of four points and one-point-one rebounds.

Kent Faurote of Edgewood College in Madison has made the national men’s small college basketball Team-of-the-Week from D3hoops.com. Faurote, a junior guard-and-forward, scored a career-high 26 points against Lakeland. And he almost had the second triple-double in Edgewood history with 17 points, 14 rebounds, and eight assists against Aurora. Faurote shot 61-percent for the week, including 4-of-7 from three-point range.

University of Wisconsin sophomore Maverick Darling has been named the men’s Big Ten indoor track athlete-of-the-week. Darling won the three-thousand meter event at the Great College Invitational last weekend. His time of seven-minutes, 52-point-31 seconds was the fifth-best of all-time at Wisconsin.

For the third time in four weeks, Mindy Harrington of Carthage College has been named the CCIW’s indoor track-and-field athlete of the week. Harrington, a senior, took second in both the shot put and the weight throw at Illinois Wesleyan’s Bob Keck Invitational last weekend.
