TAMPA, Fla. - The Marquette University men's basketball team barely got by South Florida last night, 59-58 at the Sun Dome.

The Golden Eagles trailed by 16 points early in the second half. But they used a strong press and a stifling half-court defense to catch up – and Marquette finally took the lead with 4:23 left. Darius Johnson-Odom blew a chance to seal the victory when he missed two free throws with one-point-eight-seconds left. Toarlyn Fitzpatrick was then fouled. He made the first shot – and he tried to miss the second to give South Florida a chance to send the game to overtime. But his shot banked in, and the Eagles simply ran out the remaining ticks of the clock.

Fitzpatrick led South Florida with 16 points and 13 rebounds, as the Bulls dropped to 2-10 in the Big East and 8-17 overall. Marquette went above .500 in the conference at 6-5, and is now 15-9 overall. They’ll play at Georgetown on Sunday.
