U's basketball teams both lose Thursday

-- The University of Minnesota's men's and women's basketball teams were both beaten Thursday night.

MINNEAPOLIS - Illinois forward Mike Davis scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Illinois Fighting Illini to a 71-62 win over the 25th-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers in a Big Ten Conference tussle at Williams Arena.

Demetri McCamey also scored 17 points for the Fighting Illini, which is 16-8 overall and 6-5 in the Big Ten. The Gophers dropped to 16-8 overall 5-7 in the league. The loss is the fourth straight for the Gophers and the first four-game losing streak since Tubby Smith took over as head coach. Junior Gopher forwards Trevoe Mbakw and Ralph Sampson III turned in double-doubles.

Free throw shooting proved to be a difference maker in this contest as Illinois outscored Minnesota 23-10 from the charity stripe.

The Gophers play at Iowa on Sunday.

The University of Minnesota women's basketball team lost a Big Ten road game at Iowa last night, 64-62. Iowa guard and Minnesota native Kachine Alexander scored the decisive points with six-seconds left to go in the game to give the Hawkeyes the two-point win. Alexander is from Minneapolis and played at Benilde-St. Margaret's. Minnesota was led by China Antoine's 19 points. Kiara Buford chipped in with 15. The Gophers are 11-13 overall, while Iowa goes to 18-7. Minnesota hosts Ohio State on Sunday.
