MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Brewers are still talking with second baseman Rickie Weeks about a possible long-term contract extension.
General manager Doug Melvin said yesterday he would know more in the next couple days about the possibility of a long-term agreement. Weeks is the only Brewer who’s still eligible for salary arbitration for this season, and his arbitration hearing is scheduled for next week. He asked for $7.2 million this year, while the Brewers are offering $4.85 million. In recent weeks, there were reports that the two sides had scuttled talks on a multi-year contract to try and get a one-year deal done.
Weeks is eligible for free agency at the end of this season, and the Brewers say they want to keep him in the fold.
