NEW RICHMOND - The Ellsworth High School boys' basketball team got its first look at New Richmond's new gym Friday and played better in there against the No. 5 ranked Tigers than they did at home. But New Richmond still came away 58-46 winners, handing EHS its third straight loss.
New Richmond outscored the Panthers 15-7 in the second quarter to create some separation between the two teams. Ellsworth head coach Cory Brathol said his team struggled with turnovers in the second quarter.
Brathol also noted that the Tigers' physical, athletic team caused the Panthers problems both on the perimeter and in the paint.
"They can close those driving lanes real quick," said Brathol, adding, "They're an excellent offensive rebounding team. They crash four guys hard to the rim every time."
Travis Kroll played his best game of the year, according to Brathol, and led Ellsworth (10-8 overall, 5-6 Middle Border Conference) with 18 points.
"They really gave us a chance to be in the ballgame," Brathol said. "It was nice to see out of our point guard."
The Panthers are off until next Friday when they host Osceola.
