GREEN BAY - Green Bay Packer general manager Ted Thompson has a new contract extension.

Thompson took over as the team's general manager in 2005, building the roster that carried the Packers to the Super Bowl title last week. When the Packers edged the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25, they became just the second number-six seed in NFL history to win the top prize. Of the 53 players who were active for the Super Bowl game last Sunday, 49 were acquired by Thompson. Twenty-six were drafted by him.

Winning pays off for head football coach Bret Bielema and his offensive coordinator. The Wisconsin Board of Regents approved pay raises for the duo which led the Badgers to an 11-2 record and a berth in the Rose Bowl last season. Bielema's contract was extended and it will pay him two and a half million dollars next year. Paul Chryst gets a base race to $405,000 a year, plus annual additions of $100,000 for the next five season. Bielema's extension was announced two weeks ago, but it needed final approval by the regents. That came yesterday.
