Morning State Sports Briefs: UWM men's hoops continues to win
Wisconsin Sports-- The UW-Milwaukee men won their seventh straight game last night, 79-76 at home over Valparaiso. The Crusaders were knocked out of first place in the Horizon League, as Cleveland State took over the lead with a win over Wright State. Valpo is now second, and UWM is third.
MILWAUKEE - The UW-Milwaukee men won their seventh straight game last night, 79-76 at home over Valparaiso. The Crusaders were knocked out of first place in the Horizon League, as Cleveland State took over the lead with a win over Wright State. Valpo is now second, and UWM is third.
Their game was tied at 74 when Milwaukee’s Tony Meier hit a three-pointer with 47 seconds left. Howard Little made two free throws to make it a one-point game. But nobody else could hit their free shots down the stretch, and UWM walked away with the victory. Tone Boyle scored 28 points, as Milwaukee improved to 11-5 in the conference and 16-11 overall. Brandon Wood scored 23 points for Valparaiso, which dropped to 11-4 in the conference and 19-8 overall. The Panthers will play at Buffalo on Saturday in the Bracket Buster series.

The Marquette University women have won five-of-their-last-six, after beating Seton Hall on the road last night 66-58. The 22nd-ranked Golden Eagles had a 19-5 run to close out the first half with a 14-point lead. Seton Hall went on to lose for the 10th time in their last 11 contests. Four Marquette players scored in double figures, led by Tatiyiana McMorris with 17. Jasmine Crew had 20 points and Whitney Wood had 10 rebounds for Seton Hall, which dropped to 1-11 in the Big East and 8-17 overall. Marquette improved to 8-4 in the conference and 20-5 overall, giving coach Terri Mitchell her ninth 20-win season. The Golden Eagles will host Rutgers on Saturday.

The University of Wisconsin women tied a team-record low of 11 points in the first half, as they lost at Iowa 59-44. Badgers’ senior Tara Steinbauer suffered a leg injury in the first two minutes and sat out the rest of the game. She’ll be evaluated by team doctors today. The Badgers were held scoreless for eight-and-a-half minutes in the first half before the Hawkeyes took a 13-point lead at the break. Wisconsin out-scored Iowa 18-9 to start the second half and got as close as four later on. But Iowa went up by nine with 3:35 to go, and the Badgers only had one more basket after that. Kamille Wahlin scored a game-high 19 points for Iowa, which improved to 8-and-6 in the Big Ten and 20-7 overall. Alyssa Karel had 15 for Wisconsin, which dropped to 9-4 in the conference and 14-11 overall. The Badgers are still in third place, as they get ready to host Michigan on Saturday.

The University of Wisconsin football team still plans to host Nevada-Las Vegas in their season opener on September third. And Badger officials say they do not expect any changes in the schedule. There were reports that UNLV was trying to back out of the contest. Those reports surfaced after a third party tried to get Texas Christian and the Badgers to hold a rematch of the Rose Bowl for the season opener in Madison. But TCU says it’s already committed to playing Baylor on September third. And Wisconsin football operations director Mark Taurisani says no one from UNLV has contacted him to try and cancel their game.

In soccer, the Milwaukee Wave won at Omaha 10-8 in overtime last night. Travis MacKenzie scored the game-winning at 1:46 into the extra period. Victor Quiroz forced overtime by scoring a three-point goal late in the fourth quarter for Omaha. Ian Bennett and Giuliano Oliviero each scored twice for the Wave. The game was marred by a fight in the third period. Six players received blue cards, and one was ejected for leaving the bench area.
