Morning State Sports Briefs: UWM baseball team tops Tennessee
Wisconsin Sports-- The UW-Milwaukee baseball team won its first game of the season yesterday, 9-6 at Tennessee.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The UW-Milwaukee baseball team, Wisconsin's only Division 1 program, won its first game of the season yesterday, 9-6 at Tennessee.
Freshman Ryan Solberg hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to put the Panthers up 9-nothing. But the Volunteers scored four times in the same inning, and two more in the eighth. Tennessee suffered its first loss, and is now 2-1. Milwaukee is 1-2.

The UW-Parkside women have earned the number-two seed in the Great Lakes Valley Conference basketball tournament. The Rangers will host 11th-seeded Bellarmine on Saturday near Kenosha. Parkside finished its regular season schedule this past weekend at 15-3 in league play and 21-5 overall. The Ranger women placed second behind top-seeded Quincy in the league’s North Division. On the men’s side, Parkside was given the 11th seed in the GLVC Tournament. They’ll play at number-two seed Southern Indiana on Saturday night. Parkside finished the regular season in fourth in the North Division at 6-12 in conference play and 9-17 overall. Southern Indiana is 14-4 in the league and 22-4 overall. Both teams won their regular season finales during the weekend. Parkside qualified for the tournament with a 62-61 victory at Saint Joseph.

The Milwaukee Admirals are still tied for first place in their American Hockey League division, after losing at home to Texas 2-1 yesterday. Sean Backman scored the deciding goal midway through the second period. Jonathon Blum scored Milwaukee’s only goal on a power play in the first period. Tyler Beskorowany had 34 saves for Texas, which moved to one point behind front-running Milwaukee and Houston in the AHL’s West Division.

In the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Milwaukee Wave lost at Baltimore yesterday 20-9. Robbie Aristodemo scored a hat trick for first-place Baltimore, which is now a-game-and-a-half up on second-place Milwaukee in the standings with four to play. Both teams have secured playoff spots, but the regular season winner gets to host the league championship match.

The University of Wisconsin softball team took third place at the Texas Invitational, with a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over Colorado State yesterday. The Badgers scored four runs in the final inning, after being down 6-3 in the top of the seventh. Freshman Stephanie Peace singled home the game-winning run, as Wisconsin improved to 4-2 – tied for the second-best start in the team’s history.
