Wisconsin Sports
-- There were two upsets last night in the opening round of the WIAC men’s basketball tournament. UW-Superior, the Number-six seed, eliminated third-seeded Whitewater 78-72 on the Warhawks’ home court. And Number-five seed Platteville advanced with a 66-63 victory at fourth-seeded La Crosse.

There were two upsets last night in the opening round of the WIAC men’s basketball tournament. UW-Superior, the Number-six seed, eliminated third-seeded Whitewater 78-72 on the Warhawks’ home court. And Number-five seed Platteville advanced with a 66-63 victory at fourth-seeded La Crosse.

All five starters for Superior scored in double figures, led by Jake Smith with 18 points. Platteville out-shot La Crosse 51-to-37 percent. The semi-finals will be played tomorrow night. Superior will play at top-seeded Stevens Point. And Platteville will be at Number-two River Falls. The tournament title will be decided on Saturday. The WIAC women’s basketball tourney opens tonight.

There were no surprises last night in the first round of the Northern Athletics Conference women’s tournament. Top-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran advanced with a 76-55 romp of Milwaukee Engineering. Erika Laete had 31 points and 11 rebounds for Wisconsin Lutheran, after she scored 50 in her previous game on Saturday night. Number-two Dominican eliminated Marian of Fond du Lac, 94-54. Third-seeded Concordia-Mequon advanced with a 62-60 win over Rockford. And Number-four Benedictine defeated Edgewood 62-58. Wisconsin Lutheran will host Benedictine in tomorrow night’s

semi-finals. And Dominican will be at home against Concordia-Mequon. The title game will be played Saturday. The NAC men’s tournament begins tonight.

University of Wisconsin forwards Keaton Nankivil and Mike Bruesewitz both practiced last night after sitting out on Monday. And both are expected to play for the Badgers tonight, when they take on Michigan at Ann Arbor. Bruesewitz, a sophomore, has struggled with flu-like symptoms. Nankivil, a senior, hurt an ankle during Sunday’s home victory over Penn State. But he returned and made a career-high five three-pointers. Nankivil has shot 48-percent from beyond-the-arc this season. That’s the second best in the Big Ten this season. The 12th-ranked Badgers are in third place in the conference at 10-4, and they’re 20-6 overall. They’ll play a Michigan team that’s 7-8 in league play, and 17-11 overall. The Wolverines have won four-of-their-last-five, but they lost to Wisconsin by 16 points in Madison on January fifth. Also tonight, the Badger women host Indiana.

The Marquette University women's basketball team used a late rally to win at Providence last night, 62-50. The Golden Eagles ended the game with a 16-to-2 run. Teya Wright gave the Friars their final lead with 6:24 left. And they missed their last eight field goal attempts the rest of the way. The Eagles outshot Providence 49-to-37 percent, and they out-rebounded the Friars 36-to-27. Paige Fiedorowicz had 20 points and 12 rebounds, as 24th-ranked Marquette improved to 9-5 in the Big East and 21-6 overall. Miranda Tate scored 17 for Providence, which dropped to 5-9 in the conference and 12-14 overall.

The Milwaukee Admirals took sole possession of first place in the American Hockey League’s West Division with a 5-4 victory at Houston last night. The Admirals were down by one when Matt Halischuk tied the game with a power play goal with just over 12 minutes left. Halischuk then scored the game-winner almost two minutes later. Milwaukee now has 73 points for the season, two more than second-place Houston. Texas is third, three points back.

Scott Gillespie of Ripon College and Janelle Groer of Carroll are the men’s-and-women’s basketball players-of-the-week in the Midwest Conference. Gillespie, a senior guard, averaged 19 points and nine assists in his final two regular season games. And Gillespie broke Ripon’s single-season assist record for the second straight year with 179. Groer, a junior forward, became the 13th Carroll player to score a-thousand career points when she had nine against Beloit last Wednesday. Groer also scored 31 in her regular season finale against Illinois College. The Midwest Conference men’s-and-women’s tournaments both begin on Friday night.

Benedictine is the coaches’ pre-season favorite to repeat as the Northern Athletics Conference softball champions. Benedictine went 23-1 a year ago, and the Eagles return four all-conference players including Brittany Adcox – the league’s pitcher-of-the-year. Aurora is projected to finish second, and Dominican third. Lakeland is the top Wisconsin team in the softball pre-season poll, and is projected to take fourth. Concordia-Mequon is picked to finish fifth and Marian sixth.

Green Bay Packers’ assistant strength coach Dave Redding has retired. Coach Mike McCarthy hired Redding two years ago as the team’s new strength-and-conditioning coordinator to replace Rock Gullickson. He held the job for a year before becoming an assistant under current coordinator Mark Lovat. The 58-year-old Redding was previously a strength coach for Cleveland, San Diego, Washington, and Kansas City. He spent two years as a private fitness-and-nutritional consultant before McCarthy brought him back to the NFL.
