HARTFORD - The Marquette University men’s basketball team improved its chances of making the NCAA Tournament with a signature road win last night, 74-67 in overtime at Connecticut.

The Golden Eagles blew an 11-point halftime lead when the Huskies started the second half with a 26-to-7 run. But Marquette got a big boost in the overtime from Darius Johnson-Odom, who scored nine of his 17 points in the extra period. Kemba Walker led UConn with 27 points. But he missed four shots and committed a turnover in the overtime.

The Golden Eagles had lost nine games to nationally-ranked teams, and they were 68th in this week’s RPI Rankings – putting them squarely in the bubble for the Big Dance. The victory improved Marquette’s record to 8-7 in the conference, and 17-11 overall. Connecticut played without coach Jim Calhoun, who was at a sister-in-law’s funeral. It was also the first game the Huskies played since getting sanctions this week for recruiting violations. Marquette is back home on Sunday against Providence.
