Three racers break record at Birkie
Wisconsin Sports-- Three competitors beat the old record for the American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race Saturday in northern Wisconsin.
HAYWARD - Three competitors beat the old record for the American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race Saturday in northern Wisconsin.
The race is a recreation of Norwegian history, representing the skiing rescue of an infant who would become the country's king. It's fitting that Norwegian Tore Martin Gundersen was the winner of the 38th annual race. Caitlin Comptom of Minneapolis won the women's competition. The course is 50 kilometers for freestyle skiers and 54 for classic skiers. Juergen Uhl of Burlington, Vermont, repeat as the men's winner in the Birkie Classic. Jennie Bender of Minneapolis won the women's race.

Needing three straight victories to be assured of a berth in the NCAA tournament, the Marquette Golden Eagles host Providence this afternoon. Tipoff at the Bradley Center is 3 p.m. An upset victory over the University of Connecticut last week puts Marquette in a good position. The Eagles improved from 68th to 54th in the RPI, now holding a 4-10 record against top-25 RPI teams. No college squad has faced more top-25 opponents, helping the Golden Eagles to a 31st-ranked strength of schedule.

It's not a record, but it's a good start. The Milwaukee Brewers report they sold 98,000 tickets on the first day of individual game sales for the 2011 season. The record was set two years ago at 104,000 tickets. Hundreds of fans camped outside Miller Park in what is called the "Arctic Tailgate" for two days before the windows opened yesterday. Three games are sold out of individual tickets. This is only the second time in team history that a regular season game -- other than opening day -- has sold out on the first day tickets were available. The 2009 record for first-day ticket sales was 104,000

Anthony Hill and Ja'Rob McCallum each scored 23 points as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee beat Youngstown State in overtime, 94-87. The victory improved the Panthers' record to 18-12, including 13-5 in the Horizon League, and secured the top tournament seed for the team. Milwaukee earns a bye until a home game in the semifinals next Saturday. McCallum hit a three-point a half-minute into the overtime to give his team a boost. There were 21 ties and 18 lead changes in the hotly-contested game.

An 18-5 second half run for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay wasn't quite enough as the Phoenix dropped a 64-57 decision to Cleveland State. The Phoenix trailed by 15 at 48-33, cutting it to just a bucket, 53-51, with a little over four minutes to go. The Vikings pulled away from there, never trailing. Alec Brown scored nine of Green Bay's 18 points during the rally, tying with Daniel Turner to lead Green Bay with 13 points. Turner also had a dozen rebounds.

University of Wisconsin defensive end J.J. Watt says he's ready to play just about anywhere on the field. Watt is in Indianapolis for the NFL combine this weekend. He says he was measured at six feet, five and three-eighths inches tall and weighed 290 pounds. He says he's willing to put on some weight to play defensive end, or he could kick inside to a three-technique or one-technique on passing downs. Watt says he'd even be willing to play tight end, if that gets him some playing time for an NFL team. He says he will be doing 20 interviews this weekend.
