MADISON - The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team finished another unbeaten home season last night with a 78-63 win over Northwestern. The Badgers went 16-0 at the Kohl Center, the third time in Bo Ryan’s 10 years in Madison his team didn’t lose at home.
Ryan says it’s something he never tells his players about. But senior forward Jon Leuer says the 12th-ranked Badgers never plan on losing at the Kohl Center – and one of its goals for this season was to go undefeated there. Leuer scored 26 points against Northwestern, which stayed in the game until the final six minutes by shooting 47-percent for the night.
The Wildcats made 11-of-21 three-pointers, which got them to within three in the final 10 minutes after trailing by 16 earlier in the second half. Northwestern missed back-to-back threes when Jordan Taylor hit a three that put Wisconsin up by eight with 5:35 left. Taylor then sealed the victory with another trey with three minutes left that put the Badgers up by 11. Wisconsin needed a 57-percent shooting performance to pull off the victory.
Michael Thompson scored 19 points for Northwestern, which fell to 6-11 in the Big Ten and 16-12 overall. Wisconsin is 12-4 in the conference and 22-6 overall. The Badgers remain third in the Big Ten, two games behind first-place Ohio State with two games left. Wisconsin plays at Indiana on Thursday night.
