MADISON - For the fifth time in school history and third time in recent odd numbered years, the Ellsworth High School wrestling team is WIAA Division 2 State Team Champions.
The No. 2 ranked Panthers add the 2011 state title to the ones they won in 2007 and 2009 after beating the No. 1 ranked team in Division 2, Luxemburg-Casco, 40-22 Saturday evening at the UW Fieldhouse.
Brent Stockwell powered Ellsworth's effort from the first match as he pinned the Spartans' Dylan Blemke in 2:40 at 112 pounds.
Stockwell had switched spots in the line-up with Brad Cain and the maneuver worked as EHS jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Stockwell said he was motivated not only to get things off to a good start to make up for a loss he took in the semifinals during the afternoon session.
"I thought I let the team down but everyone rallied behind me," Stockwell said. "I came out on the mat fired up, wanting to help the team get off to a good start."
This team support and self-motivation is what pleases head coach Jack Radabaugh the most about this year's state champion.
"This team really has bonded well throughout the season," Radabaugh said. "The senior leadership has been great and they've brought everyone together. And the kids know if they don't wrestle well. They know how to fire themselves up again. With this group, it's not something extra I have to do."
Cain didn't win his match at 119 against Matt Ronsman but EHS won three out of the next four matches with decisions for Roarke Langer, Austin Welch and D.J. Yarwood for 16-6 team lead. A pin by the Spartans brought them within four points at 16-12 and they came within four again at 20-16 after a win at 160.
But Ellsworth dominated the rest of the way, winning four out the next five. Being sick last week didn't stop Noah McLay from getting a tech. fall, 17-1 at 171 and Parker Hines stuck his opponent at 189 in just before the second period buzzer. Zac Reister won 5-1 at 215 over Luxemburg-Casco's Matt Ronsman and Jens Lantz concluded the meet quickly with a fall in 2:15 at 103.
Also winning for Ellsworth, Levi Kuesel at 152 by a 10-1 major decision over Matt Zellner, who he also beat at the state individual meet last weekend.
Ellsworth's final regular season record is 21-3 while Luxemburg-Casco finished 32-2.
