Wisconsin edges Minnesota for WCHA women's title
Regional Sports-- A Kelly Nash goal at 14:11 in overtime gave the Wisconsin women's hockey team a 5-4 victory over Minnesota in the WCHA Women's Final Faceoff championship contest.
MINNEAPOLIS - A Kelly Nash goal at 14:11 in overtime gave the University of Wisconsin women's hockey team a 5-4 victory over Minnesota in the WCHA Women's Final Faceoff championship contest at Ridder Arena.
Minnesota scored the first three goals of the game and had a two-goal lead, 4-2, after two periods. But, the furious onslaught of 56 shots by Wisconsin finally started having an effect. Goals by Madison Packer and Meghan Duggan tied the score in the final seven minutes, then Nash won it.
Brianna Decker scored the Badgers' first goal on a power play, then Duggan cut the lead to 3-2, :38 seconds later. She finished the game with two goals. Goalie Alex Rigsby mad 26 saves.
Sarah Erickson had two goals and an assist for the Gophers and teammate Jen Schoullis had a goal and an assist. Goalie Noora Raty made 51 saves in the face of the Badger onslaught.
Both teams will get an invitation today to the eight-team NCAA tournament and both figure to be at home next weekend. Wisconsin's record is 34-2-2 going into the tournament while the Gophers are 26-9-2.
