Morning State Sports Briefs; Butler tops UWM to win Horizon title

Wisconsin Sports
-- The UW-Milwaukee men’s basketball team had a cold first half last night. And the Panthers couldn’t recover, as they fell to Butler 59-44 at home at the U.S. Cellular Arena in the title game of the Horizon League Tournament. Milwaukee ended its 10-game conference winning streak.

MILWAUKEE - The UW-Milwaukee men’s basketball team had a cold first half last night. And the Panthers couldn’t recover, as they fell to Butler 59-44 at home at the U.S. Cellular Arena in the title game of the Horizon League Tournament. Milwaukee ended its 10-game conference winning streak.

Butler gets the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, but the Panthers will still get an NIT berth because they won the regular season crown. The Bulldogs, the defending national runners-up, outhustled UWM early while building up a 17-point lead. Coach Rob Jeter said his Panthers were rushed early and were quote, “new to the moment.” He said the difference came down to “50-50 balls, and Butler was just a little bit quicker.” Milwaukee only shot 22-percent in the first half and 30-percent for the game, while committing 16 turnovers. The Panthers were able to regroup in the second half. They got to within three before Butler sealed its victory with a 16-to-1 run. Tony Meier, Tone Boyle, and Anthony Hill each scored 10 points for UWM, which fell to 19-and-13 overall. Matt Howard, the tournament MVP, scored 18 for Butler. The Bulldogs improved to 23-9.

The Marquette University men kept their hopes alive for an NCAA bid with an 87-66 win over Providence in the first round of the Big East Tournament in New York. The Golden Eagles led by 24 points late in the first half. But Providence opened the second half with a 10-4 run to get within seven. Marshon Brooks tried to keep the Friars in the game by scoring eight straight points midway through the second half. But the rest of his teammates struggled as Marquette pulled away. The Eagles shot 57-percent from the floor, and they out-rebounded the Friars 53-to-37. Darius Johnson-Odom scored 23 points. And Jimmy Butler had 19 points and 10 rebounds as Marquette improved to 19-and-13. Vincent Council scored 21 for Providence. Brooks, who set a new Big East single-season scoring record, had 20. The Friars ended their season at 15-17. Marquette, which is seeded 11th, will play Number-six West Virginia tonight in the second round.

There were not a lot of big surprises last night in the first round of the girls’ state high school basketball playoffs. Both defending champions who played won easily. Cuba City, last year’s Division-Three titlist, won its Division-Four opener against Wisconsin Heights. And Wausau Newman, which won the D-Four crown last year, had the rout of the night in Division Five. The Cardinals crushed Wisconsin Valley Lutheran 95-12. All seven Number-one seeds which played last night were victorious. All were in Division-Five, and Wausau Newman was among them. Twenty-four lower seeds defeated higher ones. A trio of Number-three seeds lost – Milwaukee Washington, Orfordville Parkview, and Clear Lake. All fell to sixth-seeded opponents. Over 160 of the 474 schools had first-round byes, including all five AP Number-ones – Middleton, Luxemburg-Casco, Whitefish Bay Dominican, Eau Claire Regis, and Black Hawk. Defending champs Milwaukee Pius XI and New Berlin Eisenhower also had the night off. Second-round games will be played Friday night in the four lowest divisions. Division-One schools will play on Saturday.
