NEW YORK - The Marquette University men’s basketball team lost to Louisville 81-56 last night in the quarter-finals of the Big East Tournament in New York.
The 11th-seeded Golden Eagles were playing their third game in three days, while the third-seeded Cardinals were just their tournament run after a double-bye. But Marquette coach Buzz Williams refused to cite fatigue as an excuse. He said it would have been hard to stop Louisville’s three-point shooting under any circumstances. The Cardinals made a season-high 13 treys, while Marquette shot a season-low 29-point-eight percent. The Golden Eagles made just one field goal in the final four-and-a-half minutes of the first half, and were down by five at the break. Marquette trailed by 10 midway through the second half, and the Cardinals then went on a 16-to-4 run to seal the victory.
Mike Marra scored 22 points for Louisville, which improved to 24-8 and will play Notre Dame in tonight’s semi-finals. Jimmy Butler had 14 points for Marquette, which fell to 20-14. They expect to get an NCAA Tournament bid on Sunday.
