MINNEAPOLIS - University of Minnesota fans who were hoping to watch their men's basketball team play a few more games this season are out of luck. The National Invitational Tournament did not extend an invitation to the 17-14 Golden Gophers.
The 32-team NIT field was set last night after the NCAA Tournament pairings were announced. The NIT traditionally takes the top remaining teams after the NCAA tourney takes the top 68 college basketball teams. Minnesota had lost its final six games of the season and 10 of its last 11 contests overall.
The disappointing end to the season concludes a season that began with high hopes and promise after the Gophers won the Puerto Rico Tip-off Tournament in November with wins over nationally-ranked North Carolina and West Virginia.
