No upset here as Badgers trounce Belmont

TUSCON, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin shot 55-percent from three-point range last night in defeating Belmont 72-58 in their NCAA men’s basketball tournament opener.
The fourth-seeded Badgers regained the shooting touch they lost a week ago against Penn State. And they move on to play fifth-seeded Kansas State tomorrow night in the Southeast Regional in Tucson Arizona. Both teams struggled early, but Wisconsin recovered to take a 34-27 lead at the break. And the Badgers never trailed in the second half.
Jon Leuer led Wisconsin with 22 points, all but five in the second half. Jordan Taylor hit 5-of-9 from three-point range, and six Badgers made at least one from beyond-the-arc. Mike Bruesewitz, who sprained a knee last Friday, had eight points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes. Mike Hedgepeth scored 17 for Belmont, whose 58 points were a season-low. The Bruins’ constant full-court press couldn’t stop the Badgers. And Belmont ended its season at 30-5. They’re 0-4 lifetime in the NCAA’s.
Wisconsin improved to 24-8 and take on No. 5 seed Kansas State in a third-round match-up Saturday at 7:40 p.m.(CST). K-State beat No. 12 Utah State 73-68.
