Racine St. Kate's, La Crosse Aquinas move into D-3 finals

-- Defending champion Racine Saint Catherine’s and top-ranked La Crosse Aquinas will square off tomorrow for the Division-Three boys’ state high school basketball title. Both powerhouses won their semi-final games today in Madison at the Kohl Center.

MADISON - Defending champion Racine Saint Catherine’s and top-ranked La Crosse Aquinas will square off tomorrow for the Division-Three boys’ state high school basketball title. Both powerhouses won their semi-final games today in Madison at the Kohl Center.

Saint Catherine’s closed out Little Chute 58-51 in the day’s second divisional semi-final. That was after La Crosse Aquinas eliminated Lakeside Lutheran 85-52. Racine Saint Catherine’s won its game at the free throw line. The Angels made 12-of-20 from the charity stripe, to just 2-of-6 for Little Chute. Cory Thomas scored 14 points for Saint Cat’s, which improved to 24-and-3. Rick Hammen and Kenneth Lowe both scored 12 for Little Chute, which ends its season at 23-5.

Aquinas sophomore Bronson Koenig, who’s considered the state’s top college prospect for 2013, had 14 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists today. Jimmy Ancius and Mike Conway each scored 20 as No. 1 ranked Aquinas won its 23rd straight game. They were up by 11 at the half, and out-scored Lakeside Lutheran 46-24 in the final two periods. Ancius had 12 rebounds and Conway added eight boards. Craig Wilke scored 10 for Lakeside Lutheran which ended its season at 25-2.

The Division-Two semi-finals are being played this afternoon. Merrill takes on Waunakee, and then Seymour faces Whitefish Bay. The Division-One semis will be played tonight. Title games in five divisions will be played tomorrow.
