Championship Day set at boys' state hoops tourney
The five championship games are set for the WIAA State Boys' Basketball Tournament as Whitefish Bay will take on Merrill in Division 2 and Madison Memorial will play De Pere in Division 1 Friday's semifinal games in the Kohl Center.
MADISON - The five championship games are set for the WIAA State Boys' Basketball Tournament as Whitefish Bay will take on Merrill in Division 2 and Madison Memorial will play De Pere in Division 1 after Friday's semifinal games in the Kohl Center.
Three top ranked teams have lost in the state tournament so far, Waunakee and Appleton East being the latest victims Friday.
Wauankee lost to Merrill 55-52 as the Bluejays rallied behind Paul Jesperson's game-high 27 points. Jesperson will play college ball at the University of Virginia next season.
Whitefish Bay defeated Seymour 54-52 in the other Division 2 semifinal on a last-second tip-in by the Blue Dukes' Jamie Schnek.
In Division 1, Madison Memorial was back in the championship game again after beating Milwaukee Hamilton by 10 points 55-45. Miles Chamberlain scored 22 points to lead the Spartans. They will take on De Pere which upset Appleton East 62-57. Reece Zoelle led the Redbirds with 19 points as De Pere, making its first state appearance since 1977, held on to their early lead in the face of an Appleton East rally.
Today's state final pairings are as follows:
Division 5: Clayton (25-1) vs. Randolph (24-3) - 11:05 a.m.
Division 4: Grantsburg (22-5) vs. Marathon (26-1) - approx. 20 min. following D5 final
Division 3: La Crosse Aquinas (26-1) vs. Racine St. Catherine's (24-3) - approx. 20 min. following D4 final
Division 2: Merrill (16-11) vs. Whitefish Bay (19-8) - 6:35 p.m.
Division 1: Madison Memorial (21-6) vs. De Pere (25-2) - approx. 20 min. following D2 final
