KNOXVILLE, Tenn - The Marquette University women’s basketball team ended its season last night with a 79-to-70 loss at Tennessee in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Number-eight Golden Eagles never led, but they fought back every time the top-seeded Lady Vols built up a lead. And because of that, Tennessee had its narrowest victory margin for an NCAA game on its home floor since 1991.

Marquette got to within one with 6:15 left, but the Lady Vols scored the next six points – and then they hit six-of-eight foul shots to seal their victory. Freshman Meighan Simmons led Tennessee with 18 points. Angel Robinson scored 19 for Marquette, which is now 0-4 lifetime in NCAA second-round contests.

Coach Terri Mitchell said the Eagles fought with all their hearts. Their season ends at 24-and-9. Pat Summitt’s Lady Vols are now 33-2. They’ve won 23 straight games, with a 34-game winning streak at home. They’ll play fourth-seeded Ohio State on Saturday.
