Overnight State Sports Briefs: Weather postpones two girls basketball super sectionals; Pius and Middleton advance to state

Two of tonight's four "Super Tuesday" games in the girls' state high school basketball playoffs were postponed until Wednesday night. The other two "Super Tuesday" girls' contests went as scheduled and Milwaukee Pius XI and Middleton were winners.

Pius beat Racine J.I. Case 70-61 in the Wisconsin Lutheran Super Sectional in Milwaukee while Middleton edged Franklin 61-59 in the Lake Geneva Badger Super Sectional played at UW-Whitewater.

Snow-and-freezing rain forced a delay in the Division-One quarter-final in Stevens Point between Eau Claire North and Appleton East. And a facility conflict at UW-Oshkosh caused a delay in the Glendale Nicolet-De Pere contest until tomorrow night. That game is being moved to Oshkosh West High School. All super sectional winners will advance to the Division-One semi-finals on Friday night in Madison. Semis in four other divisions begin on Thursday.

There’s still a chance that Brewers’ catcher Jonathan Lucroy can start in the regular season opener nine days from now at Cincinnati. Lucroy had a metal pin removed from his little right finger yesterday. He said he would swing a bat today and see how it feels. Manager Ron Roenicke says Lucroy has been doing everything but hitting, and his legs are ready to go. He’s been catching bullpen sessions with the pin in place – and he’s had throwing drills as well. Lucroy broke the pinkie on February 23rd during a catching drill in the early part of spring training.

Steve Djurickovic of Carthage was named to the men’s All-American small college first team by D3hoops.com. Only one other Wisconsin men’s player was recognized. Tony Mane of La Crosse made the third squad. Michael Taylor of Whitworth was named D-Three’s national Player-of-the-Year. The coaches’ association also named its All-Americans. Djurickovic made the first team, Scott Gillespie of Ripon made the second squad, and Mane was named to the coaches’ third team.

Two women’s players from the Badger State also received All-American honors from D3hoops.com. Britta Petersen of UW-Stevens Point made the third team. And Lyndsey Seewald of Carroll was an honorable mention. Chelsie Schweers of Christopher Newport is the D-Three women’s player-of-the-year. Petersen was also named to the All-American first team by the women’s coaches association. Andrea Flease of the Pointers and Dana Thompson of Whitewater were coaches’ honorable mentions.

The Milwaukee Admirals will try to get back into first place in the American Hockey League’s West Division tonight, when they host Oklahoma City. The Admirals are one point behind first-place Houston. And only seven points separate the top six teams in the division with a handful of games left. Milwaukee has 11 remaining on its schedule, and Houston has just eight. The Admirals will face an Oklahoma City team that’s tied for fourth in the West with 81 points, six fewer than Milwaukee and seven behind Houston. The Barons will play their fourth game in the last five days, and they’re 2-1-0-2 on a nine-game road trip. Milwaukee has not played since Saturday night, when it lost to Lake Erie. The Admirals will play eight of their next nine contests at home. Their NHL parent club, the Nashville Predators, have assigned goaltender Atte Engren of Finland to Milwaukee. And Admirals’ goaltender Chet Pickard has been moved to Cincinnati of the ECHL.

UW-Stevens Point is No.6 in the final men’s small college basketball poll of the season from D3hoops.com. Saint Thomas of Saint Paul, which won the NCAA’s Division-Three tournament last weekend, is Number-one in the final poll. The Pointers dropped three spots to sixth after falling in the Sweet-16 round. Saint Norbert is the only other Wisconsin school in the final men’s Top-25. The Green Knights slipped eight places from the previous poll to 24th. River Falls and Concordia-Mequon also received votes. On the women’s side, tournament champion Amherst is the final Number-One. Stevens Point dropped four spots to seventh, after the Pointers didn’t get out of the Sweet-16 round. Saint Norbert fell 11 spots to 25th. Whitewater, La Crosse, and Wisconsin Lutheran also received votes.

Alex Raver of Wisconsin Lutheran is the baseball pitcher-of-the-week in the Northern Athletics Conference. Raver, a freshman right-hander, gave up no earned runs in his first two collegiate starts. He struck out 13 in his debut and six more in five innings in his second contest. Robert Weis of Concordia-Chicago is the NAC’s top position player. In softball, Rosa Lewis of Maranatha Baptist is the honored position player. The freshman shortstop batted .588 last week and drove in six runs with a double and two triples. Bria Hahn of Madison Edgewood is the softball pitcher-of-the-week. The freshman right-hander threw a shutout against Hamilton on Saturday, with no walks and four strikeouts. The NAC also recognized Max Divelbiss of Edgewood in men’s tennis, and Katie Schommer of Wisconsin Lutheran in women’s outdoor track-and-field.
