Morning State Sports Briefs: Prep girls hoops games postponed again, state tourney begins today

De Pere and Glendale Nicolet will square off this evening at Oshkosh. And Eau Claire North and Appleton East will play at UW-Stevens Point. The winners will face each other tomorrow night in the Division-One semi-finals. Top-ranked Middleton will take on defending champion Milwaukee Pius XI in the other semi, after both teams won their “Super Tuesday” contests two nights ago.
Meanwhile, the rest of the girls’ state high school tournament will open this afternoon in Madison as scheduled. Semi-finals in the new Division-Five are first up at 1:35. Prentice will take on River Ridge. And then top-ranked and unbeaten South Wayne Black Hawk will face Wausau Newman, the Division-Four champs from a year ago. The D-4 semis will be played tonight. Top-ranked Eau Claire Regis goes against Westby. And Algoma will wrap up the evening against Oostburg. Semi-finals in Divisions Two-and-Three will be played tomorrow, along with the D-1 semis. Title games in all five divisions are set for Saturday at the Kohl Center.

The Milwaukee Brewers go back to work today, after enjoying their only day off at spring training yesterday. The Brewers will play the Angels of Anaheim this afternoon in Tempe, Arizona. Randy Wolf will make his second-to-last start of the spring. And the Brew Crew hopes to have first baseman Prince Fielder back in the lineup. He missed Tuesday’s exhibition with a sinus infection.

Forbes Magazine says the Brewers’ are worth $376-million. That’s seven-percent more than a year ago, but Milwaukee is still only the 22nd most valuable among the 30 Major League organizations. Forbes says the average big league franchise is worth $523-million- – seven-percent more than a year ago. Forbes estimated the Brewers’ revenues at $179-million last year, with an operating income of almost $12-and-a-half million. The magazine said the Brewers are worth almost 69-percent more than they were in 2005, when Mark Attanasio bought the team for $223-million. The New York Yankees continue to be the most valuable Major League franchise, at an estimated one-point-seven billion dollars.

Madison PGA golfer Steve Stricker is re-adjusting his swing. He tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he wants to reduce the right-to-left flight of his ball – and he needs to get more backspin with his irons. Stricker says he has not played poorly this year – but he’s not at the level where he wants to be. Stricker has only played in five tournaments in 2011. He was fourth and ninth in his first two starts. But since then, Stricker has finished no higher than 18th – that being at the World Golf Championships’ Cadillac tournament earlier this month. Stricker says he won’t play in this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando. But he’s entered in the Shell Houston Open next week, as a tune-up for the Masters the following week at Augusta National. Stricker is 10th in the current World Golf Rankings, but that’s three places lower than where he started this year.
