DALLAS - UW-Green Bay’s record-setting journey in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament has come to an end. The Phoenix lost last night to top-seeded Baylor 86-76 in a semi-final at the Dallas Regional – Green Bay’s first Sweet-Sixteen game ever.

Sophomore standout Brittney Griner had a career-high 40 points and 10 rebounds, despite sitting out the final six minutes of the first half with two fouls in 14 seconds. Baylor led by nine at the break. Fifth-seeded Green Bay played the Bears tough for most of the second half. UWGB trailed by three with just over 13 minutes left when Baylor when on a decisive 14-0 run in which Griner and freshman point guard Odyssey Sims scored all the points. Sims scored 18, as Baylor outshot Green Bay 59-to-39 percent. Griner was 15-of-21 from the floor, and made all 10 of her free throws. Kayla Tetschlag led Green Bay with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Celeste Howeisch scored 20.

Both had shared the Horizon League’s player-of-the-year honors, and both are seniors who’ve played their final games for the Phoenix. The loss dropped Green Bay to 34-2, and ended its 25-game winning streak. Baylor improved to 30-5, and will play Texas A&M tomorrow night with a Final Four bid at stake.
