The crowds include Wisconsin teachers and other public service employees, as well as union agitators bused in from around the country. The signs and rhetoric are hateful and shameful, “Death to the Tyrants”—going so far as placing a target on the picture of Gov. Walker with the slogan “Retreat and Reload”—that’s suggesting assassination—and sending e-mails containing death threats to senators who voted for the bill can’t be excused as “free speech.”

The breakdown of civility is reflecting a degradation of American culture.

All of this went on before the eyes of young, impressionable students who were encouraged to come and support their teachers, many of whom falsely called in “sick” to take off time to participate in this action. One wonders what kind of role models these teachers are providing for their students.

Their slogan was “This is how democracy works.” No. We are a republic, guided by the vote of the citizens of the state, not by outsiders rushing in to protect their costly prerogatives at the expense of financially stressed taxpayers.
