Ellsworth and Prescott's prep softball teams were both handed their first losses of the season Monday.
The Panthers were beaten 3-1 at home by Baldwin-Woodville and Prescott lost at Osceola 12-5. B-W is now at the top of the league standings with a 4-0 record with Ellsworth and Prescott both 3-1 and Osceola is at 2-2.
The Blackhawks' Paige Weiske hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first which snapped EHS' shutout streak at three games and 21 innings
“Give Halle (Hatch) credit; she adjusted after that,” Ellsworth coach Ryan Casper said. “She pitched a great game.”
Hatch pitched all seven and allowed five hits. All the runs were earned and she didn’t strike out a batter.
In the bottom of the fourth, Ellsworth plated a run and loaded the bases with one out. The Panthers, however, would do no further damage because their runner on third was doubled up on a fly out to the second baseman.
Casper, who was coaching third base, took the blame.
“It’s more my responsibility to make sure she understands where she needs to be,” he said.
Ellsworth (3-1 overall and Middle Border Conference) travels to Glenwood City today.
Meanwhile PHS suffered a nightmarish defeat at Osceola. The Cardinals committed eight fielding errors, negating the 10 hits they had in the ballgame.
Alyssa Krings, Mary Kate Pryor and Shelby Anderson all had two hits for the Cards with Pryor hitting a double and driving in two runs.
