MILWAUKEE - Marquette freshman guard Vander Blue is due in court today on Milwaukee municipal charges of assault-and-battery. He was given a citation last October for an incident on the Marquette campus.

The details have not been disclosed. Blue has pleaded innocent. School spokeswoman Brigid O’Brien-Miller said the case also triggered a review under the university’s student conduct code. But she could not disclose the outcome due to federal privacy rules. Blue played 19 minutes a game during his freshman year with the Golden Eagles. The former Madison Memorial High School star averaged around five points and three rebounds a game during Marquette’s Sweet-16 season.

Despite an injury-riddled season, Milwaukee Bucks’ center Andrew Bogut still finished sixth in the voting for the NBA’s defensive player-of-the-year. Dwight Howard of Orlando became the first player to win the award three straight times. Bogut was hurt all season by the right elbow injury he suffered last April on a hard fall to the floor against Phoenix. It kept him out of last year’s playoffs – and it reduced his scoring average to just under 13 points a game. But Bogut still led the league with two-point-six blocked shots per contest, and he averaged a career-high 11-point-one rebounds. He also had back injuries and a couple of migraine headaches during the season. And the Bucks shut Bogut down for the final four games, so he could have surgery to remove loose bone fragments and scar tissue from his right elbow. He displayed a jar of those fragments, saying he wasn’t exaggerating when he claimed he was in pain. Bogut says it’s a lot better than it was, and he hopes to get at least some practice in during May.

The Marquette University men’s golf team is in 10th place among the 12 teams competing in the Big East Tournament in Palm Harbor, Florida. The Golden Eagles dropped two spots in the standings after yesterday’s second round. Marquette is at 39-over-par 607. That’s 24 strokes behind front-running Notre Dame going into today’s final round. Senior Ben Sieg is Marquette’s top individual. He’s tied for 11th, five strokes off the lead at six-over-par 148.

University of Wisconsin men’s golf coach Jim Schuman will resign after this season. He plans to start a new golf academy in Madison, and he says he hopes to keep growing as both a teacher and a player. Schuman has been the Badger men’s coach for the last eight years. Athletic director Barry Alvarez says both the Badger program and University Ridge Golf Course are better as the result of Schuman’s efforts. Schuman led the Badgers to the NCAA regionals in both 2007-and-’08 – the first time it happened in back-to-back seasons since the early 1990’s. Schuman was inducted into the state golf Hall-of-Fame in 2009. A search for a new coach will begin as soon as possible.
