Morning State Sports Briefs: Hawkins to be in Brewer bullpen for next ballgame

Wisconsin Sports
-- LaTroy Hawkins is expected to be activated before the Brewers’ next game tomorrow night.

MILWAUKEE - LaTroy Hawkins is expected to be activated before the Brewers’ next game tomorrow night.

The right-hander reliever was called up earlier this week after a minor league rehab assignment. But because Hawkins pitched back-to-back days for Triple-“A” Nashville last weekend, he couldn’t be used during the first part of the week anyway. Hawkins threw a bullpen session yesterday. He’s expected to be a set-up man in the late innings – and manager Ron Roenicke says he’ll ease Hawkins back into action. The veteran had an operation on his throwing shoulder last August.

Former UW-Stevens Point pitcher Jordan Zimmermann is now 1-3, after his Washington Nationals lost to Saint Louis 5-3 in the opener of a day-night twin bill. Zimmermann, who’s from Auburndale, gave up five runs on eight hits in six innings. That was less than a week after he threw a perfect game into the sixth inning and lost to Philadelphia.

The Chicago Cubs split a day-night double-header with San Diego at Wrigley Field. The Cubs won the opener 2-1 in 11 innings, and lost the nightcap 5-4. Reed Johnson hit a walk-off homer for the Cubs in the day game. Ryan Ludwick had three hits, including a two-run homer, for the Padres in the night contest.

The Milwaukee Admirals have evened their American Hockey League first-round playoff series at two games apiece. That’s after a 3-2 Milwaukee victory at Texas last night. Mark Van Guilder scored the deciding goal with just over three minutes gone in the third period. Gabriel Bourque and Taylor Beck also scored for the Admirals, and Jeremy Smith had 30 saves. With the series now tied at 2-2, it has come down to a best-of-three set. The next game is tomorrow night in Cedar Park, Texas.

The University of Wisconsin softball team split a double-header with Minnesota yesterday in Madison at Goodman Diamond. The Badgers mustered only three hits in a 1-0 loss in the opener. But they came back to win the nightcap 5-3. Gophers’ pitcher Sara Moulton struck out seven in the first game, and Shannel Blackshear had two of Wisconsin’s three hits. In Game-Two, the Badgers sealed their victory early with four runs in the second inning. Kendall Grimm homered during that frame. Wisconsin is now 3-7 in the Big Ten and 23-18 overall. Minnesota ended the day at 4-6 in the conference, and 26-19 overall.
