MARINETTE - Marinette Marine is recalling the last of its previously-laid off workers. The company is busy with four major projects, including two new combat ships for the Navy.

About 110 production workers have been recalled. Another 100 jobs have recently been added – mostly for engineering and managing the new ship contracts. Marinette Marine now has about a-thousand employees, and it plans to hire a-thousand more during the next two years to fulfill the Navy’s contracts for littoral combat ships. Suppliers are expected to hire more people as well. And officials have said the Navy contract could add a total of five-thousand workers in northeast Wisconsin and upper Michigan.

Marinette is currently building the USS Fort Worth, and it’s about 85-percent finished. Among other things, the company is also working on a vessel for surveying fish – and a vessel for Alaskan research.
