Morning State Sports Briefs: Phillips says he expects to be back with Badger grids in 2012
Wisconsin Sports-- University of Wisconsin back-up quarterback Curt Phillips expects to return in 2012, after he was ruled out for the upcoming season.
MADISON - University of Wisconsin back-up quarterback Curt Phillips expects to return in 2012, after he was ruled out for the upcoming season.
He had surgery last week to remove swelling in his right knee, where he tore an ACL ligament last March and again in November. But coach Bret Bielema said the knee did not heal as well as expected, and he'll need another operation. Bielema did not say if Phillips tore the knee again his limited work at the Badgers' spring practices, which ended after Saturday's spring game. Phillips has used his red-shirt -- and unless he gets a new medical red-shirt, he would only have one year of eligibility in 2012. Bielema said Phillips is considering all his options. Four quarterbacks remain on the Wisconsin roster -- redshirt sophomore Jon Budmayr, redshirt freshman Joe Brennan, incoming freshman Joel Stave, and walk-on Nate Tice.

Former Green Bay Packers' assistant Bo Pelini is getting a big raise as the head football coach at the University of Nebraska. Media reports said Pelini has been given a $425,000 annual raise, as his Cornhuskers are about to join the Big Ten Conference. His new base salary is almost two-point-eight million dollars a year. And he'll get an extra 100-thousand each year until the contract runs out in 2015. Pelini will also receive bonuses for playoff appearances -- $100,000 for winning a division title, and more for each step up the post-season ladder. He'd get $650,000 for winning the BCS title game. Pelini coached the Green Bay linebackers under Mike Sherman from 2000-through-'03. He left to become Nebraska's defensive coordinator in '03, and was promoted to the head job in '08. Pelini is 30-12 as the Cornhuskers' head man.

The University of Wisconsin men’s tennis team will have the No. 6 seed at the Big Ten Tournament that begins on Thursday in Madison. The Badgers will play No.11 Penn State in the first round, and the winner will play third-seeded Minnesota on Friday. Wisconsin went 5-5 in regular season conference play, and they’re 11-12 overall. They’ll play a Penn State team that failed to win any of its 10 conference matches, and is 10-17 overall. Regular season champion Ohio State has the top seed in the tourney, which runs through next Sunday at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison.

The University of Wisconsin women’s tennis team has the fifth-seed in the Big Ten Tournament which begins on Thursday at Michigan. The Badgers earned a first-round bye, and will play Number-four Ohio State in the quarter-finals on Friday. Michigan earned the top seed. The Badgers have a three-match winning streak going into the conference tourney, after a 4-3 home victory over Illinois on Easter Sunday. Juniors Angela Chupa and Aleksandra Markovic won their singles and doubles matches, as the Badgers finished the regular season at 5-5 in the Big Ten and 14-10 overall, their first winning season in several years.

The University of Wisconsin softball team topped Illinois 2-1 in Madison on Easter. The Badgers scored both their runs in the first inning. Shannel Blackshear drove home the first run with a sacrifice fly. Krueger scored Wisconsin's final run when she beat a throw home on a stolen base attempt by Stephanie Peace. Freshman Cassandra Darrah threw a four-hitter for her 15th complete game of the spring. She's now 13-7, with the second-most wins by a freshman in school history. The Badgers improved to 4-8 in the Big Ten and 24-19 overall. Illinois fell to 7-5 in the league, and 20-18 overall.

The UW-Green Bay softball team crushed Detroit 13-6 yesterday. The game was played at Alverno College in Milwaukee. Kendra Woepse drove in five runs for the Phoenix with a single, a double, and an error by Detroit's left fielder. And Woepse scored three times. Ashley Nannemann got the win despite giving up six runs in four innings. Green Bay improved to 5-and-10 in the Horizon League and 18-18 overall. Detroit fell to 0-13 in the conference, and 5-30 overall.
