Judge's ruling lifts NFL owners' lockout

ST. PAUL - A judge has granted the players' request for an injunction to lift the NFL lockout.
The NFL Network reports U.S. District Court Judge Susan Nelson decided not to stay the decision, which could force the league to open for business immediately. The league is expected to appeal the decision promptly, looking to avoid the start of free agency and offseason workouts.
If an appeal is upheld, the lockout could be reinstated. The Vikings are slated to travel to San Diego to take on the Chargers on September 11th, the first week of the regular season.
Green Bay Packers’ linebacker Nick Barnett said on Twitter that he would try to call team officials. Tight end Jermichael Finley said he hoped to return to Lambeau Field soon. But no Packers had said or tweeted that they would show up at 1265 Lombardi Avenue this morning. Some agents said they wanted their players to show up, and start collecting their off-season roster bonuses that were withheld due to the nearly two-month-old lockout.
The Packers are more involved in longer-term issues, like free agency. When the salary cap was removed last season, players had to wait longer to become unrestricted free agents. And Packers like Nick Collins were caught in the gap. But what happens now is anyone’s guess. Judge Nelson said the lockout causes irreparable harm to the players’ ability to earn a living – and it hurts the fans who have a strong investment in this fall’s NFL season.
