IOWA CUTY - The University of Wisconsin softball team swept a double-header at Iowa for the first time in school history.

The Badgers won the opener 7-6 on a squeeze bunt by Stephanie Peace that scored Abby Gregory in the top of the seventh inning. Then in the second game, Wisconsin won 6-3 by scoring all their runs with two outs in the fifth-and-sixth innings. The Badgers are now 6-8 in the Big Ten, with their most conference victories since 2007. And they’re 26-19 overall.

Reports say about 20 players auditioned in Green Bay in advance of the draft. Wisconsin guard Bill Nagy was among them – and he says he’d love to sign with the Pack if he’s not drafted. But those free agent signings will have to wait. That’s because teams are still not acting on contracts while the NFL appeals this week’s court ruling which technically ended the owners’ lockout. A request to delay the ruling, pending the appeal, was denied yesterday.

Wisconsin high school soccer coaches can have unlimited contact with their players during the summer. The WIAA approved the change at its annual meeting in Stevens Point. Until now, soccer coaches were only allowed to have contact days with their plays each summer. Coaches tried for years to change that, and they finally succeeded on a vote of 183-117. As a result, the only sports that don’t allow unlimited summer contacts are football, basketball, hockey, and volleyball. Also yesterday, WIAA director Dave Anderson said there might be more changes for the girls’ state high school basketball tournament. He said the coaches’ advisory committee had suggested that it be moved back to its old time slot a week before the boys’ tournament in March. The girls’ tourney was moved in 2009 to a week after the boys, so the girls could play at the UW’s Kohl Center in Madison. But the tournament overlapped with the start of the indoor track season by three weeks. And it was played the same week that practice began for softball and soccer.
