Wisconsin farmers are finally getting their crops in the ground – and just in time, according to some officials. Sixteen-percent of the Badger State’s corn crop was in the ground as of Sunday.

That’s up from just one-percent a week ago, but it’s still way behind the norm of 44-percent for the date. A cool, wet spring is blamed for the late start. Outagamie County Extension agent Kevin Jarek says the next week is crucial for farmers to get their corn planted. If it doesn’t get done, he says they’ll lose valuable growing days – and their yields will be lowered as a result.

Until now, many farmers have not planted soybeans because they’re behind on corn – and some fields have been too muddy to put their machines in. About a third of Wisconsin’s oats are planted, but that should be at 79-percent by now. Potato planting is underway in Portage County.

About two-thirds of Wisconsin’s farms have adequate soil moisture, and the rest have too much. There were numerous reports of standing water in fields in east central Wisconsin.
