MADISON - The state Senate’s Public Safety Committee is scheduled to vote today on a bill that virtually ends early releases for state prisoners.
Democrats agreed two years ago to let certain non-violent offenders leave prison early, as an incentive for behaving behind bars. They also said it would save the state money. But Assembly Majority Leader Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) said it hasn’t saved any money – and it’s made our streets less safe because some dangerous criminals have been let go.
About 550 offenders have been released under the program.
