Aftermoon State Sports Briefs: Packers on charity tour of UP, NEW and Indianhead
Wisconsin Sports-- The NFL owners’ lockout does not apply to charity events. So players and team personnel took off today on a bus tour to meet fans in the northern half of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

Packers Matt Flynn, Desmond Bishop, and Josh Sitton are along for the ride – along with some ex-Packers and team president Mark Murphy. They’re in the UP today, Ashland tomorrow, Eau Claire Thursday, and Wausau on Friday. General manager Ted Thompson, coach Mike McCarthy, and other team officials greeted the players to see them off. And they had a brief chat, after having virtually no contact with each other since the lockout started in early March. The lockout normally bars team officials and players from talking to each other, but there’s an exception for charity events. Murphy says he misses the players – and while they’ll some about the labor situation, he says everybody realizes it’s “above us all” at this point.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will hold its first mixed martial-arts card in Milwaukee this summer. The event is set for August 14th at the Bradley Center. It’s called “UFC on Versus-Five,” and the Versus cable channel will televise it. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel says light heavy-weight fighter Stephan Bonnar has said he’ll battle Carlo Vermola. But it’s not likely Anthony “Showtime” Pettis of Milwaukee would be on the card, because it’s not a pay-per-view TV event. Pettis is scheduled to fight Clay Guida in the “Ultimate Fighter-13 Finale” in Las Vegas on June fourth.

Four men’s golf teams from Wisconsin are in the NCAA Division-Three tournament which began today in Greensboro North Carolina. Carroll College of Waukesha and the Milwaukee School of Engineering earned their bids by winning their conference tourneys. The WIAC does not officially sanction men’s golf – but that didn’t stop UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stout from getting at-large berths. Meanwhile, the Division-Three women’s golf tournament started today at Howey-in-the-Hills Florida, and two Wisconsin teams are in it – Eau Claire and Carroll. Both tournaments will have four rounds, and they’re scheduled to run through Friday.

Cole Kraft of UW-Milwaukee has been named the Horizon League’s baseball batter-of-the-week. The senior infielder went 9-for-18 last week with five RBI’s and nine runs scored. He helped the Panthers win a series against Youngstown State, and take non-conference victories over Iowa and Wisconsin Lutheran. Kraft had an .833 slugging percentage for the week, with a .609 on-base percentage. Coty Bates of Cleveland State is the Horizon League’s top pitcher.

UW-Stevens Point moved up one place to seventh in this week’s national small college baseball poll from D3baseball.com. The Pointers are 30-8 overall. They won the WIAC regular season crown last weekend, and they have the top seed and hosting rights for the conference tourney which starts on Friday. UW-Whitewater remains at No.10 in the new poll. Carthage dropped two places to 22nd. Oshkosh dropped out of the Top-25, after being 21st a week ago. The Titans still received votes. Marietta of Ohio remains at No. 1.

Brooks Braga and Garrett Scray, both of UW-La Crosse, have been the WIAC’s baseball players-of-the-week. Braga, a junior outfielder, batted .464 in six games last week. And he homered twice in a game against Whitewater. Scray, a junior right-hander, threw 13 scoreless innings in three contests. He struck out seven during that stretch and gave up seven hits and a walk.

Matt Katzman of Lakeland College is the baseball pitcher-of-the-week in the Northern Athletics Conference. Katzman, a senior right-hander, threw a six-hit shutout against Edgewood with five strikeouts and no walks. Edgewood only batted .194 in that game. Mike Foley of Aurora is the baseball position player-of-the-week. In softball, Jamie Villalobos of Alverno is the top position player. Villalobos, a sophomore first baseman, went 5-for-7 with seven RBI’s in a pair of non-conference victories. Brittany Adcox of Benedictine is the softball pitcher-of-the-week. The NAC also recognized Brian Tresedder of Concordia-Mequon in men’s tennis.
