The field is pretty much clear for Baldwin-Woodville and Ellsworth to compete for the Middle Border Conference softball title. B-W downed defending champ Prescott Tuesday by a 7-4 score and Ellsworth beat New Richmond 10-3.
The Panthers exploded for six runs in the first inning on the road. The highlight of the opening frame was a grand slam by Kayla Christopherson. Ellsworth coach Ryan Casper said that Christopherson's blast was over a fence marked at 210 feet. She went 2-for-5 on the day with five RBI.
Ellsworth scored all 10 of its runs in the first three innings. But around the fourth inning, Casper said, the Panthers started to throw the ball around. They tallied five errors on the game.
"I think we got a little too comfortable at that point," Casper said.
But Halle Hatch continued her great pitching. She struck out five and didn't surrender a walk or an earned run.
Ellsworth is now 8-1 in the league and plays host to Osceola on Thursday. The Panthers are 2.5 games in back of Baldwin-Woodville, who stays undefeated in the league standings at 10-0.
Prescott, meanwhile, was unable to hold onto a 4-2 lead as B-W plated four runs in the fifth inning and added one more in the seventh at Prescott.
Paige Wieske hit three doubles and drove in three runs for the Blackhawks
