Alexi Casilla had a one-out, walk-off base hit off Tigers’ closer Fernando Rodney. Orlando Cabrera hit a two-run homer and Jason Kubel hit a solo shot for the Twins, who will open their Division Series in New York tonight against the Yankees.
Bob Keppel got the win in relief, as Minnesota became the first Major League team to win a division title after being three games out with four contests left.
The Twins took the Central for the first time since 2006.
Detroit failed to lock up the division for the second time in four seasons after having a comfortable lead in September.
The Tigers have still not won a division crown since 1987.
Left-hander Brian Duensing will start for the Twins tonight against Yankees’ left-hander and former Brewer C.C. Sabathia.
The best-of-five Division Series guarantees the Twins at least one more baseball game in the Metrodome, before they move outdoors to Target Field next year.
