RED WING - In the final tune-up before the playoffs for both teams, Red Wing defeated Ellsworth 5-2 Tuesday at the Athletic Field.
James Georgakas suffered the loss, but he pitched well for the Panthers. Georgakas allowed five runs (three earned) over six innings and surrendered nine hits.
“I thought we saw a really good pitcher who kept us off balance,” Red Wing coach Jim Bohmbach said.
Cole Kelly had the most success off Georgakas going, 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Red Wing learns its playoff draw Wednesday. After playing the Panthers, Bohmbach said, “I think we’re ready to go.”
Bohmbach added that’s he’s looking forward to having three days in a row to practice so the team can work on things like suicide squeezes and rundowns.
Red Wing improved to 15-5.
Ellsworth coach Steve Block praised Georgakas and Jake Betthauser. Both of Ellsworth’s runs were the result of Betthauser’s two-run homer off winning pitcher Zach Garner.
“We’ve been waiting for this to happen all year. … I’m hoping this gives him a lot of confidence,” Block said of Betthauser’s blast.
Third-seeded Ellsworth (7-10 overall) plays host to No. 6 Baldwin-Woodville on Friday in the WIAA Division 2 regional.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better game prior to playing Baldwin-Woodville,” Block said.
