PRESCOTT - An aggressive strategy at the plate helped Somerset jump out to a 5-0 lead over Prescott in Wednesday WIAA Division 2 regional final game at Firehall Field. Winning pitcher Sean Conrad shut down the Cardinals offense as the Spartans won 9-2.
Spartan batters were going after first pitch strikes and hitting single after single to advance base runners and plate them at a 5-0 clip.
Prescott didn't score their runs until later in the ballgame but the margin was too great to catch-up, especially when they were unable to plate any runs with several base runners in the sixth.
Jake Hintz, Derrick Munsen and Bryan Early all hit doubles for the cards and Billy Brookshaw drove in a run with a single.
Somerset will take on No. 1 ranked Altoona in the Cumberland Sectional next Tuesday.
