Prescott softball in regional finals vs. St. Croix Central Thursday

The Cardinals advanced to the finals after whipping Colfax 17-7 on Tuesday at Frey Field. PHS spotted the Vikings a 5-0 lead in the second inning due a couple of fielding errors. But Prescott poured on the hits and runs to outscore the Vikings 17-2 to end the contest in the sixth. Colfax was error prone too, committing 10 in the ballgame.

Prescott's Alyssa Krings hit her third homer of the year. Mary Kate Pryor hit two doubles doubles. Both Pryor and Krings went 3-for-5 at the plate along with teammate Paige Durhman. They all scored three runs along with Dani Augustine. Durhman also hit a double and Krings had a team-high three RBIs. Marti Johnson was the winning pitcher.

PHS will be facing a SCC, 14-5 overall, squad who is the No. 1 seed in the tournament and who finished runner-up to No. 4 ranked Pepin in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference. Pitcher Nikki Brooks is one of the best in the area with 1.59 ERA and 154 strikeouts this season. She's also one of their top hitters with a .630 average and a team-high 26 RBIs and two home runs. The Panthers' other top hitters are Kali Armogost with a .433 average and Ashley Adkins at .426. She leads the team in runs scored with 26.

If the Cards win they'll be back in Hammond for the sectional semifinal against either Elk Mound or Bloomer. The sectional final in Friday, June 10 in Grantsburg.
