Friday State Sports Briefs: State prep track meet underway
Wisconsin Sports-- The 116th Wisconsin high school track-and-field meet begins this morning in La Crosse. Preliminaries will be held today, with the finals tomorrow in three divisions.
LA CROSSE - The 116th Wisconsin high school track-and-field meet begins this morning in La Crosse. Preliminaries will be held today, with the finals tomorrow in three divisions.
The defending team champions for the boys are Mequon Homestead in Division-One, Whitewater in Division-Two, and Brookfield Academy in D-Three. Verona will defend the boys’ wheelchair title it won in last year’s inaugural competition. On the girls’ side, Milwaukee Bradley Tech will go for its third straight Division-One crown. Green Bay Notre Dame is the returning Division-Two champ, and Edgar is the defending titlist in D-Three. Oconomowoc and New London won the first girls’ wheelchair crown. Among the top returning individuals is senior sprinter Dezerea Bryant of Milwaukee Bradley Tech. She holds the state records in both the 100-and-200-meter dashes, and she’s the favorite to win both titles this weekend.

The boys’ state high school individual tennis tournament resumes this morning in Madison, and the top seeds will be in action for the first time. First-round matches were played yesterday in two divisions, and the Number-one seeds in both singles and doubles received byes. The top seeds in singles’ play are Alex Jesse of Mequon Homestead and Andrew Hwang of Milwaukee University School. The top doubles’ seeds are Michael Roden and Matt Reagan of Eau Claire Memorial, and Cameron Fiebig and Justin Kaiser of Appleton Xavier. The state tournament runs through tomorrow.

Former UW-Stevens Point starter Jordan Zimmerman won his first game for the Washington Nationals since May first. The right-hander from Auburndale gave up one run in seven innings last night, as the Nationals topped Arizona 6-1 in Phoenix. Zimmermann struck out four, giving up six hits in a walk. He’s now 3-6.

UW-Milwaukee men’s basketball coach Rob Jeter is one of a dwindling number of candidates for the head coaching job at Penn State. Jeter and Pat Chambers of Boston University have been interviewed for the post vacated by Ed DeChellis, who became the new coach at Navy last week. Duquesne coach Ron Everhart also interviewed for the Penn State job, but he pulled his name from consideration last night. The next coach will have a rebuilding task. Several Nittany Lions graduated this spring including guard Talor Battle – who averaged just over 20 points a game last season.

Milwaukee native Diante Garrett had a pre-draft audition with the Bucks yesterday. Garrett starred at Milwaukee Vincent High School, and was a point guard at Iowa State. He was among 12 players who worked out for the Bucks the past two days, as the team gets ready for the June 23rd NBA Draft. Garrett’s father Dick is a former Buck, and he played five seasons in the NBA. He now works as an usher during Bucks’ home games. Diante Garrett averaged 17 points and six assists in his senior year at Iowa State. Bucks’ scouting director Billy McKinney said Garrett received tremendous training from his father. But McKinney said the most prominent player in yesterday’s workouts was UCLA forward Tyler Honeycutt. He made some acrobatic dunks at the end of his audition, and he’s projected to be picked in the 10th-to-20th spots in the first round. Milwaukee holds the Number-10 pick. UW-Green Bay guard Rahmon Fletcher was also among those working out for the Bucks yesterday.

Dirk Nowitzki used his injured left hand to even the NBA Finals last night. The Dallas forward spun around Chris Bosh and made a left-handed lay-up in the final seconds, to give the Mavericks at 95-93 win at Miami. Nowitzki, a former Milwaukee Bucks’ draft choice, hurt his left middle finger in the series opener – and he wore a split in Game-Two as he scored 24 points. Former Marquette guard led Miami with 36 – and he missed a long three-point attempt at the buzzer that would have given the Heat the victory. Instead, the best-of-seven series is tied at a game apiece. Game-Three is Sunday night in Dallas.
