Layoff notices arrive today in the mailboxes of nearly 36-thousand state employees -- warning that they could be idled if state government shuts down.

Minnesota's second shutdown in six years would start July 1st if Governor Dayton and the Republican-controlled Legislature don't resolve a dispute over taxes and spending.

Budget talks to date have yielded little progress as Dayton continues to call for a tax increase, while Republicans say the state has a spending problem, not a lack of revenue. The current state budget runs out at the end of the month.
