Afternoon State Sports Briefs: Tauscher unsure of his future

WAUKEHSA - Green Bay Packers’ offensive tackle Mark Tauscher is not sure what the future holds. The 11-year veteran was not played since last October, when he sprained a shoulder while blocking an extra point against Detroit.

At a charity golf outing in Waukesha today, Tauscher said his rehabilitation is going very well and the shoulder’s feeling much better. But he said he won’t know his options – including his ability to play – until after the NFL owners’ lockout ends. Unlike the others on injured reserve, the Packers asked Tauscher to stay with the team through the end of last season to help provide guidance and support. Asked if coaching might be in his future, Tauscher said he hasn’t thought about much besides rehabilitating his shoulder – and then seeing what comes along next.

Teams in the Northwoods League will wrap up their two-game series’ tonight. Green Bay will play at Eau Claire again, on the heels of a 7-2 Green Bay victory last night. The La Crosse Loggers will host Wisconsin Rapids, after a 7-1 pounding of the Rafters. The Wisconsin Woodchucks are at Battle Creek, where the ‘Chucks lost 6-4 last evening. And the Madison Mallards will again host Waterloo, after a 4-2 Mallards’ loss. Also tonight, Duluth will finish a suspended game at Rochester, where it was tied 1-1 in the ninth before the rains came. They’ll then play a scheduled contest. Mankato plays at Alexandria. Saint Cloud hosts Willmar. And Brainerd is in Canada against Thunder Bay. Battle Creek enters the weekend with a one-game lead over Green Bay in the South Division. Brainerd and Mankato are tied for the North lead, with Thunder Bay in third at two games back.

Wisconsin’s two teams in the Class-“A” Midwest League will stay home as they open new series this evening. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers will host Fort Wayne near Appleton, after the Rattlers edged Lake County 5-4 last night. It’ll be Beloit’s turn to face Lake County. That’s after Snappers took a pair from Fort Wayne last night. Beloit finished a suspended game with an 11-8 victory, and then won their scheduled contest 3-nothing. That moved the Snappers back to .500 at 30-30 for the first half. They enter the weekend tied for fourth in the Western Division, 10-and-a-half games behind first-place Burlington. Wisconsin is 32-28 in third place, eight-and-a-half off the pace. Burlington hosts West Michigan tonight. East leader Lansing pays at Cedar Rapids. Bowling Green is at Clinton. Kane County entertains Dayton. Peoria is at home against South Bend. And Great Lakes plays at Quad Cities.
