GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers will receive their Super Bowl championship rings tonight in a private ceremony at Lambeau Field.
The team has not said what the rings will look like, saying it will be a surprise for the players, coaches, and team employees.
After the Packers won the Super Bowl in the 1996 season, the players gasped with delight when they saw a diamond-studded “G” at the top. Safety Leroy Butler said he didn’t feel worthy at the time. Sometimes, you’ll hear about a Super Bowl ring being pawned off by somebody who fell on hard times. But most players insure their rings, and keep them hidden away most of the time. Antonio Freeman said he’ll seldom let a fan try on his ring, and only in a secure group setting. Butler said he only takes out his ring for special occasions.
Meanwhile, the Packers have received another big honor. A national fan survey rated them Number-One among all 122 pro sports teams in the ninth annual “Ultimate Standings” from ESPN-The Magazine. The Packers moved up from ninth a year ago. The Milwaukee Brewers moved up one spot to 30th, and the Milwaukee Bucks fell almost 30 places to 95th.
