Chi-Hi, SPASH first winners at state prep softball tourney

Stevens Point will play Chippewa Falls in tomorrow’s Division 1 semi-finals at the girls’ state high school softball tournament. Both teams won their quarter-final games today at the University of Wisconsin's Goodman Diamond in Madison. Chippewa Falls eliminated Appleton East 5-4. And then Stevens Point routed Madison La Follette 8-0.

MADISON - Stevens Point will play Chippewa Falls in tomorrow’s Division-One semi-finals at the girls’ state high school softball tournament. Both teams won their quarter-final games today at the University of Wisconsin's Goodman Diamond in Madison. Chippewa Falls eliminated Appleton East 5-4. And then Stevens Point routed Madison La Follette 8-0.

Point scored seven runs in the sixth inning to win it. Kelly Franks struck out 11 in five innings for Stevens Point – and Nicole Newman also fanned 11 while going all the way for La Follette. Evie Schaller and Kayla Bowe homered for Chippewa Falls.

In the other Division-One quarter-finals, Mequon Homestead is facing Kenosha Bradford. And Oconomowoc is playing Wilmot.

Tonight, the Division-Two semi-finals are scheduled. Monroe faces Baldwin-Woodville. And Oconto Falls closes out the day against Union Grove.

Semis are planned tomorrow in Divisions One, Three, and Four. Title games in all four groups are set for Saturday.

New champions will be crowned in at least three of the four groups. The only defending champ to return is Tigerton in Division-Four.
