Ellsworth and Bay City both went 1-1 in St. Croix Valley league play last week.
Ellsworth whipped St. Croix Falls at home Friday 13-1. Jeremiah Paulson hit a three-run homer, Lance Murphy hit a double and drive in three runs and Jordan Zimmer also homered and drove in three runs. Murphy was the winning pitcher as he struck out six in a five-hitter over six innings.
However, the Hubbers were unable to make a winning streak as they lost at River Falls the very next afternoon 4-2. Cody Holden had three hits, including a double while Nate Hove had two hits. Losing pitcher Mitch Johnson still struck out five batters while giving up eight hits. The Hubs' had 10 hits but stranded 12 base runners as winning pitcher Dan Morgan kept Ellsworth from getting the big hits. RF's Joel Schaeffer blasted two home runs and drove in three RBIs.
Bay City crushed Hager City 16-3 in eight innings at Brown Field Friday in Hager City. BC was bombs away in the second inning as they plated seven runs to take a 10-0 lead. HC chipped away at the lead to extend the game until the Bombers plated four more runs in the top of the eighth innings. BC had 13 hits to HC's six.
Bay City's top hitters included Hayden Flack 4-for-5 with three runs scored; Steve Bowe 4-for-5 with four runs and an RBI-double; Cole Kuesel 2-for-5 with six RBIs, four of them off a grand slam homer and Travis Balster, 2-for-4 with two runs. For the Skeeters, Henry Jager and Ross Sweig both had two hits and both drove in runs. Tony Schultz was the winning pitcher.
But like Ellsworth, BC couldn't make it two in a row as they fell at home to Menomonie Sunday 12-1. The Eagles had 15 hits and the Bombers made six errors. Kuesel had two hits to lead Bay City while Menomonie's top hitter was Jon Schoch, who was a perfect 5-for-5 with three RBIs while both Luke Schultz and Dave Rueber each had two hits and three RBIs.
Hager City did have their losing streak extended as they lost at home to Hudson Sunday 7-1. Plum City also lost Sunday afternoon at home. Osceola edged the Blues 1-0 at Legion Park. Once again Tony Garnedr had a great effort from the mound as he struck out 10. But the Braves Jared Dettman struck out 12 in a one-hit performance. In the top of the ninth, Osceola's Pete Droher scored on a RBI-single by Brady Flaherty, plating the only run of the game. Cory Meinking earned the win in relief.
