Wisconsin News-- Wisconsin made less cheese in May, while production went up nationally. According to new government figures, Wisconsin factories made just over 226-million pounds of cheese in May, down eight-tenths-of-a-percent from the previous month.

The Badger State remains the country’s top cheese-maker. California ramped up its production by almost seven-percent, to around 197-million pounds. Third-place Idaho also had an increase, as did fourth-place New Mexico and Number-five New York. Of the top-12 cheese producing states, only Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa had decreases.
Wisconsin’s Italian cheese output was eight-percent higher than the year before – but American cheeses were down almost 14-percent, and cheddar production fell by almost 18-percent. Nationally, about 915 million pounds of cheese were produced in May, up three-point-nine percent from the previous year.
